What is a Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) and what does he / she do?
Physical therapy assistants are licensed healthcare professionals that follow a physical therapist plan of care to provide comprehensive treatment for orthopedic, sport, musculoskeletal, post-surgical, and neurological conditions.
Physical Therapy assistants concentrate on improving patient’s motion, strength, flexibility, balance and endurance. They also work to reduce pain, improve mobility, control swelling, and improve overall function. This allows patients to return to work, sports, and activities of daily living earlier.
Typical requirements for physical therapy assistant include graduation from an accredited physical therapy assistant education program; passing the National Physical Therapy Assistant Examination (NPTE); and fulfilling State requirements such as jurisprudence exams. Kansas and Missouri require continuing education as a condition of maintaining licensure.
