Katie Marsh, PA-C
Katie Marsh, PA-C, earned her Master's of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Biology Degree at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin. Katie provides care for new patients in the clinical setting, as well as in the hospital. She offers patient education and evaluation prior to and following surgical procedures. She also assists in the operating room and performs a history and physical on pre-operative patients.
What is a Physician Assistant (PA) and what does he/she do?
Physician assistants are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine under physician supervision. PAs provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, as well as diagnose and treat illness, order and interpret tests, offer education on preventive health issues, conduct physical exams, assist physicians during surgery and write prescriptions.
During their education, PAs are taught, as are medical students, to diagnose and treat medical problems through therapeutic and/or surgical procedures. After graduating from college, PAs continue their education for two or more years in classroom and laboratory instruction in basic sciences, such as anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, physical diagnosis and clinical medicine. This is followed by clinical rotations in family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine and geriatric medicine.
Following graduation, PAs take a national certification examination by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants in conjunction with the National Board of Medical Examiners. To obtain state licensure, PAs must graduate from an accredited physician assistant program and pass the certifying examination.
